Doosra’s
protagonist is the Game of Cricket itself. The story of Cricket is depicted
through the life of a 20 year old sportsman who gets selected to represent
the country. The young cricketer’s paradigm driven by the forces of
power, politics, money and pressure is essayed in the 100 minute play which
, through its various characters, illustrates the metamorphosis of the game
which over the years has grown from a sport to a mere commercial venture.
A father who still believes in the values of the game, an obsessed fan with
a love and hate attitude, a Captain who is victimized, a bookie who
represents the darker side of the game, a Politician who patronizes the game
for money, a cricketer friend who always sees the funnier side of the game
are few other character through whom Doosra depicts the changing face of
Cricket.
Doosra, with a very good balance of heart warming scenes , humor and
powerful dialogues and unique technological adaptation will captivate the audience. Those who understand the
intricacies of game of cricket will appreciate it even better.
Doosra received rave reviews from
the Press and Public during its staging in Chennai. Doosra was produced by

Father (Visvanathan): is a
failed cricketer who has spent all his childhood dreaming about becoming a
cricketer. He has lost his chance of making it big due to his principles and ethics. Hence he tries to make his son a cricketer. He
is fond of his Son and even sells his only Gold Chain to buy a pair of boots
for him. As the play progresses Visvanathan becomes a disappointed man who
rues the loss of innocence in his son and in the game of cricket as well. He
is faced with a “disconnect” with him as the young man becomes a victim of
his own success. He is proud and uncompromising and his body language will
reflect this. It is a role filled with emotions and an important role in the
play. Character's age 50 to 60.
GANESH: Is a cricketer depicted as an Innocent and Enthusiastic Young
lad who is grateful to his father. He is someone ,who because of his
innocence , is also amenable. He feels the pressure of keeping up with the
times that sees a change in the game of cricket. Ganesh’s role has to depict
what every cricketer goes through . Innocent in the beginning, confident
during the peak of his career and indifferent in the end. His body language
has to change accordingly. The character’s age profile is 20 to 30. The
actor should have a very good stage presence.
VIJAY (Team mate): Vijay is a Chatter box who doesn’t hesitate to
speak his mind. Vijay is witty and he has to depict someone in the likes of
Srikanth or Yuvaraj who are known for their talkative nature. The
character’s age profile is 25 to 35 .
ARJUN: Arjun is the captain of the Indian team. He is seen as a
tough, strategizing Captain who is instrumental in bringing up Ganesh. He is
proud and confident. Arjun loses his cap owing to political machinations and
he reacts in a drunken binge reiterating the fact that cricketers are
scapegoats and pawns in the hands of a powerful lobby. This is one of the
best scenes of the play. The actor playing Arjun should have the body language
of a successful Cricketer. The character’s age profile is 25 to 35.
Rakesh ( the dubai Bookie): Rakesh is a businessman from Dubai who is
close to Arjun and the Indian team. He is a bookie who bets on the team’s
fortunes. Rakesh has an all important last scene where he tries to induce the
cricketer with the money power. The part will be played with arrogance and
lot of style. Character’s age profile is 40-45.
Minister and BCCI president: The most important character in the
play. This character will humorously depict how the game is strangled by the
draconian hold of non-cricketing administrators. The minister is abysmally
ignorant of how the game is played but has a sure feel of how to feather his
nest. His clothes, his bearing and his hilarious quips all should paint the
politician’s hues with sureness and yet without the stereotypical menace.
The character will speak a mixture of Hindi and English and We need an
experienced actor to play this role which is funny and powerful and will be
a sure winner with the audience.
Chairman Selection Committee: He is an ex cricketer , a professional
who is answerable to the Minister/ BCCI president. The Chairman is a
frustrated person having to cope up with a minister who doesn’t understand
the game and hence is often reduced to explaining technical aspects of the
game in a common man’s parlance.
Sridhar – the Fan: Sridhar is a car mechanic who idolizes the Hero
Ganesh and represents the die hard fans who worship cricketers in this
country. Sridhar is fanatical and someone who paints the image of Ganesh
with his own blood. The fan turns abusive when India loses an important
match against an insignificant opponent. A powerful role that expresses both
admiration and hatred. Needs a very emotional portrayal. Age group 35-45.
Mother Akila: Home maker. Plays a supportive role to the father. Age
profile 40-50.
Liquor baron Naidu: A business man who along with Rakesh will
illustrate how the game of Cricket has to be changed glamorously. The role
represents the Corporate India and hence the actor should carry himself well.
The character's age profile 50-60
Reporter: Who interviews the Minister. Appears briefly in one scene.
One more player + an Umpire + a Guard + 4 children to play street cricket

budget for sets and other initial investments adds up to a little over a
lakh. We need the support of Good Samaritans and patrons of the arts for our
production, and in return, there are many ROI schemes, which we have in our
basket. Kindly get in touch with us on

Doosra received
rave reviews from the Press and Public during its staging in Chennai. Each
show was attended by a full house audience of 800+ The following are the
highlights of the reviews from the Newspapers and Magazines
~ Doosra has a strong script and an unwavering focus on the theme. The
subject is new and the dialogue well crafted, scoring sixes quite often with
punch lines. The writer-director propels the play forward with a strong stay
at the crease and his team of actors is with him all the way. Wrote the
Hindu
~ This can be called as a “Hybrid play”. A mainstream play combined with the
Techniques of Street plays and Projections on the screen make it unique in
production. Due to the power of the Story and script the audience applaud
every scene. The Dialogues are laced with humor but still create a lot of
impact. People we appreciate good cricket will appreciate the play as well.
– Wrote Kalki
~ Using the electronic equipments, the feel of the stadium is brought on the
stage. The actor on stage is shown playing with International cricketers.
His shots and every wicket of his is applauded by Public. Ex Cricketer WV
Raman is shown as interviewing the Hero. All these are shown on stage making
the audiences believe that Ganesh, the fictional character, is actually a
Cricketer. The Director has used the Electronic media excellently.
~ The Dialogues are excellent -- humorous and at the same time profound. The
audience were applauding the dialogues repeatedly.
~ By taking a new subject and concept and making it as an interesting play
the team has scored a six. Anand Raghav, after his success with his earlier
plays like Sruti Bedham and Thanimai has scored a hat trick with Doosra –
Wrote Vallamai an Ezine
“The spinning
ball" was a short story written by me in 2002 when a scandal shook the
cricketing world that almost ruined the credibility of the game. Cricket
survived the crisis but the following 10 years saw the game change colors
from a sport full of nuances to an entertainment model that earned millions.
Doosra , the script , was thus born.
To stage a subject which is eaten, drunk and lived in this part of the
world, I had to tread a cautious path and indulge in lot of research to
present it to the audience. I was extremely confident of the script. Right
from the self talk by cricket in the opening shot to the end, the narrative
model adopted was different. Most of the scenes comprised of just 2 of the
characters on stage with one of them delivering a lengthy monologue. Hence
the performance to carry this task required artists of the highest caliber
and professionalism. We roped in some of the best talents in the Industry.
During the initial discussions, doubts were expressed by friends whether a
play that talked about cricket will be effective on stage !. How do you
bring in the aura of a Cricket stadium on stage ? With this demanding aspect
at the back of our minds we put in special efforts for Doosra’s production.
Video footages of the actor playing cricket were shot in blue mat and were
merged with existing Cricket footages. A footage of thousands of people
sitting on the stand was used as a backdrop for the scene showing the Hero’s
first test match. A shoot with a former Cricketer was arranged in which he
interviews the Hero of the play. Cricket commentaries were picked up and
edited to be used at the appropriate places in the scenes. They were all
used with great effect in the narrative.
We decided to do away with Set and chose Props instead and used a back drop
of a huge white screen of 10 x 25 feet in which projections ,as an integral
part of the play, were screened. We adopted techniques of street plays,
traditional mainstream theatre and brought in an element of technology .
When we went on stage, Chennai simply loved the concoction. Doosra brought
back the crowds a major portion of which were the youngsters.
I am
sure Bangalore will be bowled over with what we have to offer.
Anand
Raghav, has made significant contributions in Short stories, Stage plays and
research articles on History and Culture. A regular writer for all leading
magazines in Chennai, Anand raghav has published over 50 short stories so
far. He has won the” story of the month” prize by a prestigious literary
association three times and he has won 10 prizes in various short story
competitions in Chennai. Two of his stories have also been translated in
Telugu.
He has published two books – The first , a collection of his short stories
and the second, titled “ Ramakien” is a comparative study of Indian
Ramayanas with the Thai and other South East Asian Ramayanas. He is
currently working on the third book, a research work, on the Hindu and
Indian influence on the History and Culture of South East Asian countries.
Anand Raghav also writes book reviews for a leading library chain in
Bangalore.
He has written several short plays and three full length plays. His earlier
plays “ Sruti Bedham ‘ a musical drama is the most successful play written
by him. Sruti Bedham, with its share of a few melodious classical numbers,
narrates the tumultuous relationship between an illustrious musician and his
illegitimate daughter who takes to music driven by her hatred towards the
father only to find herself overwhelmed by the divinity of his musical
prowess.
His second play was “ Thanimai (Solitude)” The plight of elderly parents
who are left behind by their children seeking greener pastures abroad, forms
the Premise of Thanimai. Thanimai is a masterful portrayal of the life of a
lonely and disheartened old man who discovers the way to live his life
cheerfully.
